DeborahWilliams
Deborah Williams is a sculptor who manifests her innate sensitivity to humanity with impeccable insight. Her subjects are both personal and universal and she connects us to the breadth and depth of the human spirit. Empathy may be considered the most essential attribute for an artist who excels in expressing the narrative of the human condition. Deborah embodies this trait that earns her position of influence and longevity in her chosen artistic direction. Her sculptures hold us in rapture and contemplation. With superb proficiency she captures a myriad of emotions such as vulnerability, longing, loss, and wisdom. She portrays her subject’s internal life force with respect and reverence. Her attention to details in facial features -- including the fine lines, bones, and muscles -- bring her subjects to life. From the furrowed brow to the folds of fabric she enhances expression and visual impact. The impenetrable expressions and the commanding presence of her subjects are unescapable. Her profound piece “Blind Faith” is one of her many masterful symbolic and timeless figures while her portrait titled “Standing Rock”, that represents the plight of native American Indians, is a mesmerizing portrayal of strength and resilience. Taking the principles of timeless classic figurative sculpture, Deborah employs a range of tactile surfaces and contrasting forms. Well- proportioned, balanced portraits and figures are tributes to her keen sense of observation. The marriage of her technical prowess, knowledge of anatomy and psychology, and her response to world events culminate in revealing her greatest strengths and inimitable artistic voice. Although Deborah’s primary focus is the human portrait and figure, her animal series is also powerful. Her overall body of work presents a plethora of characters with whom we can relate. Her sculptures inspire us to connect with our emotions and the trials and tribulations of others. As we strive to achieve our highest human aspirations and understand our place in the world we can look to Deborah’s art for guidance and awareness. Deborah captures our full attention and interest in following her as she continues to evolve in her artistic journey. ~Renee Phillips, Director, Manhattan Arts International, New York, NY
